Back in June I had the privilege of being a member of the Landmark Project crew organized by Adventurers and Scientists for Conservation working on The American Priaire Reserve.  The American Prairie Reserve is a privately owned non-profit whose goal is to glue together existing public lands by buying the private land in between from whoever is willing to sell it thus eventually creating about a 3 to 3.5 million acre reserve and healthy ecosytem that native Northern American Prairie flora and fauna can thrive in. Another benefit of such a project is to give the world a glimpse of what it was...

Music by Ochre (ochremusic.com)1. Raido2. The Balance3. Hang GardenBetween March and July, Rachel and I took a trip around the United States. Leaving from Tennessee, directly west across the Southwest to the Pacific coast, north along 101 through Big Sur to Northern Cali where we WWOOFed for the first time, further north to western Oregon to our second WWOOFing destination. Then north east to the mountains and the Great American Prairie in Montana. It has been an epic journey to say the least. One that has revealed the magnitude, awe and beauty of nature ten-fold to that which we had merely...

A photographic definition of serenity. I had been staying at Battle Ridge campground which offered some nice trails and sightseeing, ie views of the snowcapped mountains. But a grim history and its proximity to the roadway deemed it an unfulfilling camping experience as far as intrepid adventure goes. It is convenient for hopping into Bozeman, and has accommodations such as a few vault toilets, picnic table, and camp grill. But, today and tonight I want something different. Media Folder: Media Root   Up the trail from Battle Ridge   Here I am, in a perfect meditative state on earth...

Pressing on towards Bozeman, MT we were near the Idaho and Montana border and needed a place to stay the night. It was National Forest territory so we got off at a promising exit and drove around on a gravel road. There was an amazing view of some snow covered mountains so we stopped and saw that there was a quasi-campsite basically on the side of the road. We parked then hiked up a bit to explore the mountainside that we were on then came down and I saw a river down in the valley and snow still on the ground (It was about 65 degrees and had been 80 where we were earlier in the day!. I...

Continuing up the coast we entered Los Padres National Forest, home to some of the largest trees in the world, the Redwood Sequoia. The coastline drive quickly gave way to cliffsides overlooking the Pacific Ocean as we entered "el país grande del sur” as it was once known to the first European settlers in 1770 led by Gaspar de Portolá who founded Monterey Bay, seventy miles north. It turns out that earlier Europeans with Juan Cabrillo in 1542 had encountered the daunting coastline and were overwhelmed and dissuaded from settling in the area, giving the natives an extra two hundred years of...

After leaving Death Valley we headed south in order to go north because there are no roads that go through Sequoia National Forest which is right next door to Death Valley. We had no idea where we would be spending the night but we knew it should be nearby in Sequoia because we were tired of driving and wanted to have time to just chill. Through looking on freecampsites.com we found out that there is free dispersed camping along the Kern River in Sequoia National Forest which is near Kernville, California. KERN. Hahaa. Anyways, we headed towards Kernville not knowing what to expect when we...

Monday, March 24th 2014 On through the desert we went to one of the most notoriously arid locales in the world, Death Valley. I'm not sure what we were expecting exactly... something dry, I suppose. I know I didn't expect the sheer magnitude of the largest national park (3.4 million acres) in the lower 48 United States, an International Biosphere Reserve home to a wide variety of arid climate flora and fauna. At 282ft below sea level it is also home to the lowest point in North America. Coming in from the east, our entry was a looooooong descent from about 4000ft above sea level to the low...

Saturday, March 22nd 2014 Our intent was to camp in the film-famous Valley of Fire State Park, about 50 miles northeast of Las Vegas. Whether lucky or unlucky, we arrived in the late afternoon to find the park campgrounds filled to capacity forcing us to turn away to find elsewhere to sleep. In hindsight I think this was for the best, for our alternative was a bit of a paradise of seclusion not often found in a designated campground. The park ranger at Valley of Fire collecting the $10 entry fee instructed us to look northeast to the Overton area where we may find some RV parks (blech...) or...

Wednesday, March 19th 2014 The next morning we woke up to 9°F weather, the tent sheathed in ice and our water bottles frozen solid. We scrambled to pack up our stuff in the biting cold and drove on to Arizona. While on the road we saw some signs for a kitschy store called Chee's, a Navajo owned store established in the 1960's, specializing in tchotchkes made in China, and a good selection of authentic Navajo-made gifts. Some items of interest include hand woven Navajo blankets ranging from $200 for a small washcloth sized one, to over $1000 for an elaborate and large blanket. Each blanket...

Tuesday, March 18th 2014  The next morning we packed up and drove on to Albuquerque for some New Mexican breakfast. Our diner of choice was Lollie's in a little offshoot from downtown. We got carne adovada with eggs, huevos rancheros, beef and bean sopapilla, chicharrones, and sweet rice for dessert. Yeah, we went all out. The waitress came to the table after our feast and exclaimed, “Man, you guys were hungry!” Media Folder: Media Root   New Mexican food at Lollies! After, we pressed on to El Malpais National Monument in west New Mexico, a huge and beautiful park featuring a wide...
